Gemini CLI is Google’s new open source tool for automating workflows for developers

Google unveils Gemini CLI, its open-sourced AI agent to take on Claude Code and Codex CLI. Developers use the command-line interface (CLI) terminal for just about everything. TechGiant explains that Gemini CLI is something you can come to rely on when you are trying to get work done. The new product from Google is a response to developers’ desires for AI that is all together integrated.

Gemini CLI takes Gemini to the command line. It is a thin wrapper over Gemini, being as close to the user prompt as possible with the code for the model. “While it’s great at code, we designed Gemini CLI to do a lot more. It’s a flexible, local utility you can apply to any number of tasks including content creation and problem solving, deep research, and task management,” the company wrote in the official release.

And, Google has also developed a CLI tool inside of Gemini, so you can use its AI coding assistant, Gemini Code Assist. This will bring free, standard, and enterprise users in the hands of Code Assist Developers to get prompt-driven and AI-first coding in VS Code and Gemini CLI.
